Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. A domain name is an identification label that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS). Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. They are organized in subordinate levels (subdomains) of the DNS root domain, which is nameless. The first-level set of domain names are the top-level domains (TLDs), including the generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as the prominent domains com, net and org, and the country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). Below these top-level domains in the DNS hierarchy are the second-level and third-level domain names that are typically open for reservation by end-users that wish to connect local area networks to the Internet, run web sites, or create other publicly accessible Internet resources. The registration of these domain names is usually administered by domain name registrars who sell their services to the public. Individual Internet host computers use domain names as host identifiers, or hostnames. Hostnames are the leaf labels in the domain name system usually without further subordinate domain name space. Hostnames appear as a component in Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for Internet resources such as web sites (e.g., en.wikipedia.org). Domain names are also used as simple identification labels to indicate ownership or control of a resource. Such examples are the realm identifiers used in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the DomainKeys used to verify DNS domains in e-mail systems, and in many other Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). An important purpose of domain names is to provide easily recognizable and memorizable names to numerically addressed Internet resources. This abstraction allows any resource (e.g., website) to be moved to a different physical location in the address topology of the network, globally or locally in an intranet. Such a move usually requires changing the IP address of a resource and the corresponding translation of this IP address to and from its domain name. Domain names are often referred to simply as domains and domain name registrants are frequently referred to as domain owners, although domain name registration with a registrar does not confer any legal ownership of the domain name, only an exclusive right of use. This article primarily discusses the group of domain names that are offered by domain name registrars for registration by the public. The Domain Name System article discusses the technical facilities and infrastructure of the domain name space and the hostname article deals with specific information about the use of domain names as identifiers of network hosts. Q. i have started my new business of domain name registration and hosting as a reseller. i went to google.com and searched for hosting companies but every hosting company have two types of hosting virtual and dedicated. what is better for me and why? Asked by Umer Spall - Tue Dec 4 06:07:58 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It depends what you expect your traffic to be. A virtual server is individual server space on a shared box, but it appears like it's your own server. There could be hundreds of websites hosted on that server. A dedicated server is a single box for you. Answered by TalentedChimp - Tue Dec 4 06:20:43 2007 Can I have a domain (like www.domain.com) point to a folder on my web server, like (www.server.com/domain)? Q. I'd like to run another website on my web server. I want to use at least two unique domains. Basically, if someone enters the new domain, say domain.com, it's really accessing a folder on my server (say server.com/domain/, but the url looks like the user is on the domain.com website. I don't have web hosting software that manages multiple accounts like a professional reseller web host. Is there something I setup with the domain name company, and use like a "virtual host" or something like that? Asked by D - Thu Feb 7 13:37:11 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. It depends on what you're referring to when you say "my server". Are we talking about a physical machine at your location? If so, then a specific answer will depend on the software. If Apache, then you'll want to learn the directives and look at the files in the "conf" directory. If we're talking about a web hosting account, then if you have cPanel, you'll want to look at the Add-on Domain and possibly Parked Domain features. Answered by Gruumsh - Sun Feb 10 02:23:55 2008 How do you as a web designer host your clients' websites?
Q. I was wondering how the web designers here host their clients websites and/or sell them domain names. Do you buy one shared hosting account and put them all there or do you give them their own separate accounts as a reseller? Or do you just tell them to go buy hosting somewhere? I'd really appreciate as many answers as possible? Asked by Faith Hope Love - Tue Mar 10 08:23:54 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. I agree, I personally LOVE HostGator!. But, I would recommend going through a site like just to pick up the freebies and giveaways they offer... but pick hostgator when you do. You won't regret it. They are an experienced company and I've never had any downtime with my sites.
