How can I stop intensive HD activity on startup & what could be the cause?
Q. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ1 laptop running XP Home which was fine up until two months ago, but now when the PC reaches the home screen and finishes startup, about 20 seconds later the HDD light goes crazy and the activity is so intense it's lit up solid for around 3-4 minutes. During this time, the PC is effectively hung, as no applications or mouse response is possible. I have an automatic WPA encrypted wireless broadband connection which connects on startup, with Norton Internet Security 2007, but the problem didn't occur before running this configuration. Any ideas? Could I have an unknown virus or malicious software on my PC which sets my PC up as a botnet whenever I boot it up? Even if not, it's very frustrating!

A. You may be being Bot netted. Do you notice your HD space is declining rapidly for no reason, spikes in processor activity and slow net. transmissions? Best safeguard is too back up your personals and use your recovery disk. only way too fully rule-out any remaining infiltration, viruses, bot net clients, etc
