phishing (uncountable)

Wikipedia has an article on: Phishing
  1. (computing) The act of sending email that falsely claims to be from a legitimate organization. This is usually combined with a threat or request for information: for example, that an account will close, a balance is due, or information is missing from an account. The email will ask the recipient to supply confidential information, such as bank account details, PINs or passwords; these details are then used by the owners of the website to conduct fraud.
  2. The act of circumventing security with an alias.

In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging, and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Even when using server authentication, it may require tremendous skill to detect that the website is fake. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users, and exploits the poor usability of current web security technologies. Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.

A phishing technique was described in detail in 1987, and the first recorded use of the term "phishing" was made in 1996. The term is a variant of fishing, probably influenced by phreaking, and alludes to baits used to "catch" financial information and passwords.

How to stop a phishing site invading my account?
Q. At twitter, I clicked a link that allows you to "Have more followers", and tells you to give your user ID and password. Then it apparently goes into your account and advertises the phishing site itself. And these "Advertising tweets" are really annoying me because obviously, it is false advertising. How can it stop doing this? When will it stop? What exactly should I do? How can I report this site? Help me, guys! Thanks in advance.

Is a seal on Yahoo Mail enough to stay secure from phishing scams?
Q. My facebook password was stolen by a phishing scam, and I want to take as many precautions as possible to make sure it doesn't happen again. Is the option to put a seal enough? If not, how do I change my password?

A. Phishing is mostly what's called "social engineering" - that is, somebody posts a message that looks legit and asks for personal information so they can do something helpful or to avoid imminent disaster. All the seals in the world won't help with this; only knowledge will. The way to avoid being phished is to realize that no legit outfit does business this way. If something about your account needs attention, an email announcement will direct you to their web site but will not provide any URL.
