Security is the degree of protection against danger, loss, and criminals.

Security has to be compared and contrasted with other related concepts: Safety, continuity, reliability. The key difference between security and reliability is that security must take into account the actions of people attempting to cause destruction.

Definitions

The word security is derived from the Ancient Greek "Se-Cura" and literally translates to "without fear". 'Security' is therefore the state of being secure, or the actions employed to achieve that state, i.e. to be secure is to be without fear of harm.

The definition of security provided by the Institute for Security and Open Methodologies (ISECOM) in the OSSTMM 3 is geared towards operations and how we interact with security. It states security is:

  • A form of protection where a separation is created between the assets and the threat. This includes but is not limited to the elimination of either the asset or the threat. In order to be secure, either the asset is physically removed from the threat or the threat is physically removed from the asset.

The definition given in a UN study, in 1986, is interesting as a contribution to the understanding of the concept of security, “Security is a state at which countries think that there is no danger of military attack, political pressure, or economic coercion, so that they can develop and progress freely.

  • With respect to classified matter, the condition that prevents unauthorized persons from having access to official information that is safeguarded in the interests of national security.
  • Measures taken by a military unit, an activity or installation to protect itself against all acts designed to, or which may, impair its effectiveness.

How good are home security alarms in apartment buildings ?
Q. Are home security alarms necessary in apartment buildings. We own our condo and were considering installing a home security alarm. What do home security alarms do, what are they capable of ? Is it worth paying $ 30 a month for an alarm ? Is Brinks a good name in the alarm industry. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas.

A. It really depends on the system. All of the bigger alarm companies use around the same level of product as far as quality. Be advised of the following, what the alarm companys do is sign you to a contract for years at a time. Say 4 yrs for 199.00 Right? ok and what they do is incrementally increase your monthly fee after that. The average total equipment cost for a small residential alarm system is right around that 199.00 wholesale so they lose a few bucks on the initial install to get you signed on for years at a time. They usually tie right into your phone system and if improperly installed , depending on your area they may have fines for false alarms. If you live in an area where home invasion is a possibility I would have one… [cont.]

Where can I find information on the Social Security Suspense account?
Q. From what I understand the Social Security Administration checks to verify that names and SSN's on W2's match their records. In cases where the name on the W2 does not match the social security number on record, the taxes collected are put into a "suspense" account until the dicrepancy is resolved. This situation would occur if someone were to use a fake social security card, or they make a mistake when filling out their W2. In any case the balance in such an account would have to be Billions $$. Where can I find information on this, such as current balance, balance over time, what is done with the money?

I want to increase the security features of my home preferably concerntrating on the door and windows. Advice?
Q. I would like to increase my homes security. Preferably with new doors (I've been considering timber faced steel) and windows. I've currently got bog standard upvc but would like to know if anyone knows of any other products that have stronger glass in them (not that ugly security glass). Thanks

A. Call a licensed locksmith. They deal in home security products, hardware and such. While they don't install doors and windows, they work with them on a daily basis, and can easily spot the good doors from the junk ones. Stay away from double doors, they are inherently weak in construction, and due to the law of physics enable burglars to get through them faster then single doors. Quality locks especially deadbolts should be the # 1 place to start with home security, only because they are what keeps the door LOCKED. I'd rather have a medeocre door with high quality deadbolts, then the best door in the world with the "Home Depot special" locks. Along with quality locks, the strikes need to be properly anchored to the frame. I lost count… [cont.]
